All of these pictures are of our young friend David, he who slayed Goliath. The first 3 Davids are Italian Renaissance, and the last is post-Renaissance or Baroque. David #1 is bronze, 1473 by Verrocchio. David #2 is also bronze, 1440s by Donatello. David #3 is the very famous Michelangelo marble from 1501. Lastly, we have a 1623 marble by Bernini. Which is your favorite? The earliest version by Donatello was the first full scale bronze nude since ancient Roman times. His version and that by Verrocchio depict David as a very young, scrawny boy looking very self-assured after defeating Goliath. Michelangelo's David is highly classicized and contemplative. What is David thinking as he sizes up his opponent? David looks very much like a greek god as is evident in his perfectly chiseled, ridiculously muscular physique. My very favorite though is Bernini's David. The other 3 are static- no movement indicated. Bernini's David is about to explode into action. His torso is twisted and his face is determined as he prepares to launch the stone in his sling. He's not a little boy, or a greek god. He is an athletic young man, brow set, face determined as he prepares to vanquish his foe.

the one of David looking like a girl in a pretty hat is my favorite just because it makes me laugh and i'm sure it's a big joke in heaven between David and his buddies. "que mas, Dave? hey, where's that awesome hat?"
Donatello will be waiting for you, Hill. He's gonna jump you at midnight behind the dumpster in the alley. He was probably wearing that very hat when he was sculpting and thought it was so awesome that it had to be incorporated into the sculpture.
Quit looking at little boy nethers. Law enforcement frowns on that sort of thing.
These are all awesome. But I think the Bernini is my favorite.
HOWEVER, if I met a naked David wearing that hat someday I would say "ohhhhh, man you should seriously re-think the hat. It kinda give you a gay conquistador look. But maybe that's what you are going for?"
