Breathe In, Breathe Out....

The woman in this photo is actually only 30 years old. =)
Today I saw something truly ironic. As I was entering the fine arts building at school, I noticed a young girl standing outside with some friends, smoking. She caught my eye because she was wearing some very unique shoes. Anyway, after my class I walked back out of the building, and there she was again, smoking. It was then that I noticed her surgical mask. Yes, she had a surgical mask hanging around her neck while she smoked multiple cigarettes (I'm pretty sure that after an hour and a half it wasn't the same cig). I think I might be a little more fearful of suffering for years in chronic agony, gasping for each breath because my lungs are coated in tar and full of cancerous tumors as a result of my smoking habit than I would be of contracting the swine flu. That's just me though.
On Tuesday, 600 junior/senior high school students were absent from school because of illness here in our little town of Peru. Just before I went to pick Kacey up from school today, the phone rang. It was a recorded message from the school superintendent announcing that all Peru schools will be closed tomorrow because so many teachers and other faculty members are ill. Even Kacey's teacher has been out all week.
We are being told by our professors at the college that we must stay home if we are sick, and that they will work with us if we miss assignments, exams, etc.
Is this mass hysteria, or is there real cause for concern? What are your thoughts?

you know my attitude; PANIC! get your food storage! prepare for the quarantine! well, maybe that's not the way everyone should react, but that's how i'm feeling. that's why i love how calm you are; you balance me out. last year when this all came to a head, i called you and was so freaked out and telling you that we need our food storage and you said, "i've got some peanut butter under the bed and a bottle of water by me at the computer. i'm good." that's one of the many reasons i need you. now, please tell me to calm down and that there is nothing to worry about!
