Most of you know my younger sister Hillary. She, her husband Frank, and their hilarious baby Darby will be here on Tuesday. I can't wait! I haven't seen them in so long and I know we are going to have so much fun.
When Dustin was a toddler he called Hillary "Hee Wee." As we got older I started to call her Kiwi, just because it rhymes with Hee Wee. Once when we were in our late teens, she and I went shopping in Burlington, VT. We went into a shop that required back packs to be checked at the customer service desk. She was ahead of me and didn't see the sign, so she ventured on without taking off her pack. I called to her to come back. The store clerk heard me call her Kiwi, but he thought I said "Pee Wee." He said "yes, Pee Wee, please check your back pack at the desk." I could not stop laughing!
She was my sometimes unwilling playmate when we were kids. Mom says that Hillary was content to play by herself as a child, but I needed entertainment and made her play with me. When we were really small in CA we had a VW camper van. It had a tiny coat closet in it, and for some reason she and I loved to play in it. One of us would get inside and the other would shut the door. The closet door couldn't be opened from the inside (the makers of the VW camper van obviously had no idea that Hillary and I played this game), so the one in the closet would just sit there in the dark for a few seconds then shout "okay, let me out." That's it. Fun game, don't you think? Well the last time we played, I got in the closet. I sat there for my 5 seconds, then called for Hillary to open the door. No answer. I yell a little louder, and pound on the door with my fist. Still no response. I start screaming and kicking the door with my feet, but it is all in vain. No one comes to my rescue. After 10 minutes I was still crying and kicking at the door. Finally Hillary opened the door and I shot out of the closet. I screamed "why didn't you let me out?!" She looked at me and said "I had to go to the bathroom." Being the older and wiser of the 2, I guess I should have laid down some ground rules before we started playing this silly game. #1- if you must go to the bathroom during a spirited game of lock me in the closet, be kind enough to let your sister out BEFORE you run off to take care of business.
Hillary is going through a tough time. For a few years now she has had some numbness in her legs and feet that comes and goes. A couple of months ago she and Darby were riding down the stairs in a tobagan (a laundry basket), and she fell out. She took a bit of a spill, and since then has gradually lost feeling in the right side of her body. She had a MRI taken of her spine, and the doctor told her that she has lesions on her spine. She had another scan done on her brain, and the Neurologist that she saw told her that there are lesions on her brain as well. All of these problems are symptomatic of Multiple Sclerosis. When she returns home after her visit here she will be having a spinal tap, where the doctor will make his official diagnosis. I love my sister so much. I have always felt like she is my other half. All of her strengths seem to be my weaknesses, and vice-versa. I joke sometimes that together we make up the perfect woman. She has carried me through so many sad times, and I have depended on her strength so much over the last several years.
I am praying so hard that everything is going to be okay. Will you pray for Hillary too?
